Gender Equity and Equality
Gender equity and equality is one of the SDG goals yet to be achieved in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos State where the disparity is more markedly manifest, in spite of past intervention by various development institutions and government.
What is more, as the economy regressed and social protection net gives way, more population falls into poverty and social services become less accessible to most rural poor. In the circumstance, position of women and other vulnerable groups is further compromised, augmenting the disparity in gender across board.
The current action in consortium is, therefore, a practical and multi-dimensional incorporating educational approach to drive gender equality. Accordingly, gender-equality studies has been extended to teachers, pupils, and other educators at the basic levels in target communities in Ibeju-Lekki.
Impact of the Project
As a result of this intervention by the Consortium; Capacities of 320 Women (including women living with physical disabilities) in Alimosho and Mushin are strengthened enough to grow their petty businesses, and participate in decisions-making or development initiatives in their communities.
Also, local leaders in target communities of Alimosho, Mushin, and Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Areas are beginning to recognize position of women and to support participation of women in social development processes
